A Guide to Walking Trails in Cape May

Walking trail in Cape May

Believe it or not, Cape May offers one of the most scenic landscapes along the Jersey Shore. With coastal marshlands, ponds, dunes, and an expansive freshwater wetland, Cape May’s natural features are just as beautiful as its manmade features. Discover more of the area’s beauty with these walking trails in Cape May.

Cape May Point State Park

Cape May Point State Park is the perfect place for coastal nature walks. With dunes, freshwater coastal marsh and ponds, forested areas, and sandy beaches, there is much to explore. There are several somewhat short and moderate trails within the park, perfect for hiking, biking, and bird watching. The three main trails are:

  • Duck Pond Trail – 0.5-mile boardwalk path to the Lighthouse Pond West and East. This path is perfect for bird watching and enjoying Mother Nature around you.
  • Monarch Trail – 1.2-mile loop through the center of the park. Connecting to the Duck Pond trail, this walk leads you through multiple habitats and to the highlight of Al Pond. Here there is a large viewing platform to watch for waterfowl.
  • Plover Trail – 1.5-mile loop around ponds and beach dunes. The trail begins at Duck Pond and splits at Al’s Pond.

South Cape May Meadows Walking Trails

As part of the Nature Conservancy, the South Cape May Meadows spans over 200 acres of protected habitat and freshwater wetland. As part of the Cape May Peninsula, this area is best known for its bird watching. There are two miles of trails to explore so be sure to bring your binoculars to spot the migrating birds.

Garrett Family Preserve

Located just a short two miles from downtown Cape May, the Garrett Family Preserve is a 180-acre preserve that is part of the Nature Conservancy. The preserve features wildflower meadows, open fields, and forested areas. Enjoy four miles of trail from dawn till dusk, and all for free.
