Did you know Cape May is a surfing haven for New Jersey wave riders? That’s right, when the conditions are right, the shores of Cape May call on surfers to come out and play. The two-mile stretch of town is a special piece of what it means to surf in New Jersey. And believe it or not, winter is one of the best times for surfing. So, whether you are a spectator or looking to get in on some of the action, surf’s up in Cape May!
The seasons of surfing in Cape May
Surfing in Cape May is technically available year-round but certain seasons bring better and bigger swells. The most consistent surf comes during the winter months, requiring surfers to dress warmly with wetsuits. When the nor’easters hit the coast, they can churn up some pretty serious ocean surges for those willing to risk the cold. Summers are a bit flat and are typically when you see more boogie boarders than surfers. While spring and fall can bring in some storms that churn up some of the action.
Most popular spot for surfing
There are several local surf spots along the southern edge of Cape May, but below are a few of the most popular for both those in the water and those observing from the shoreline.
Broadway Beach – Broadway Beach is the most popular spot for surfing in Cape May. Offering a great variety of waves, Broadway Beach is a beacon for Cape May surfers. Currently the most crowded spot in town, Broadway also offers the greatest variety of waves. But because the beach is so crowded in the summer, surfing isn’t allowed here during the day, but popular for bodyboarders in the summer. But that’s ok, because in winter when a big nor’easter and hurricane swells slam into the coast, watch out as surfers flock in the hundreds.
The Cove – The Cove Cape May is another great surfing spot and can be used at almost any time of year. With its consistent and reliable surf, it’s a great go-to spot for locals year-round. The Cove is located at the westernmost end of the Promenade with views of the Cape May Lighthouse.
Grant Street – Home of the Cape May Beach Patrol, the Grant Street beach area is another popular spot to ride the waves. Because of an extra-long jetty, the area brings in some of the best waves on the island. But do note it is only open to surfers before 9:30am and after 5:30pm.
