The Best Gardens of Cape May

Garden at the Southern Mansion

Cape May’s collection of Victorian homes draws in visitors from around the world. But its charming homes aren’t the only attraction in town. During the Victorian Era, beautiful gardens of Cape May were a common addition to almost any home. During this time, gardeners were exploring new and exotic plants from around the world, bringing in blooms such as begonias and canna lilies. And part of all that glitz and glamour brought about the desire to showcase their wealth with not only beautiful homes but immaculate gardens. From home fronts and storefronts to botanic gardens, here are the best gardens of Cape May.

Emlen Physick Estate

The Emlen Physick Estate is the area’s only Victorian house museum. Visitors have a chance to tour inside the home to get a feel for what it was like to live in the Victorian era in Cape May. But the inside isn’t the museum’s only attraction, its stunning gardens outside also draw in visitors ready to snap a photo. Come spring and into summer, visitors will be able to see a lovely collection of hydrangeas, tulips, begonias, and more.

Victorian homes in town

Almost anywhere you walk in town, most historic Victorian homes have a lovely garden of blooms out front for on-lookers to admire. These historic Victorian homes are something to admire with their colorful trim, fanciful fences, vine-filled urns, trickling fountains, and well-manicured gardens all add to the Victorian style that is seen throughout the town. Many homes are located along Washington Street, Hughes Street, and Jackson Street.
